Your account

Profile

Two fields — the name people see in the activity log, and the username you type to sign in.

The Profile tab holds your display name and your username. The username is the one you sign in with, so changing it changes how you log in; the name is cosmetic.

Change your name or username

Open the avatar menu in the top-right corner and choose Account. Profile is the tab you land on.

Edit either field. Save changes stays greyed out until something is actually different — hover it and the panel says "Nothing to save — make a change first." rather than leaving you guessing.

Press Save changes. A "Profile updated." toast confirms it, and the initials in the avatar update immediately.

The two fields

Name

Free text, up to 255 characters, required. It is what the panel greets you with and what fills the avatar's initials. Nothing authenticates against it.

Username

Required, up to 255 characters, and letters, numbers, dashes and underscores only — no spaces, no dots, no @. Type anything else and the field says so before you can save:

It must also be unique across the panel. A username somebody else already has is rejected by the server when you save, not while you type.

This is your login. Change it and the old one stops working immediately — the next time you sign in, the new username is the only one that will be accepted. Your session is not interrupted, so it is easy to change it, close the tab, and come back without remembering what you changed it to.

Leaving with unsaved edits

Both halves of the panel guard this field. Switching tabs inside Account with unsaved changes asks first:

The discard unsaved changes dialog

Keep editing returns you to the form with the edits intact. Discard changes throws them away and moves on. The same guard covers the sidebar, the header links and a browser reload — it is the standard unsaved-changes guard used by every settings card in the panel, not something specific to this screen.

What gets recorded

Saving writes one Updated their profile row to your activity, with the username as a property. The old values are not kept, so the log tells you that you changed your profile and when, not what it used to be.

Caveats

  • No permission is involved. Every user can edit their own profile; nobody can edit somebody else's from this screen. Administrators change other people's details in the admin area instead.
  • Name and username save together. They are one form with one button, so a save writes both fields whether or not you touched both.
  • There is no email address on a panel account. Nothing is sent anywhere when you save.
